Apple has confirmed it purchased virtual reality company NextVR, which specializes in recording live events like concerts and sports matches to be experienced in VR. The acquisition was first rumored last month, but today marks the confirmation that it has taken place. A price was not disclosed, but reports last month claimed the acquisition was expected to come in at around $100 million. NextVR stopped operating as its own entity last week, and the NextVR website is now just a simple landing page indicating that new things are coming at a later date. NextVR, which is located in Orange County, California, has a decade of experience marrying virtual reality with sports and entertainment. The company currently provides VR experiences for viewing live events with headsets from PlayStation, Oculus, HTC, Microsoft, Lenovo headsets. Apple's purchase marks the latest sign the iPhone maker is closer to revealing its augmented reality and virtual reality headset sometime this year. The headset is expected to use AR technology, which overlays computer images on the real world, and VR, which tricks your brain into believing you've been transported into a computer program. But more importantly, it could signal Apple's next major product reveal, following the iPhone in 2007, iPad in 2010 and Apple Watch in 2014. Read more -here-
