Comcast plans nationwide gigabit cable service in 2-3 years2015-08-25 01:42 by DanielaTags: Comcast
Comcast has announced that not only its fiber-to-the-home customers will be able to benefit from gigabit speeds. The company plans to upgrade its cable network to DOCSIS 3.1 and begin 1-gigabit service rollouts later this year. The aim is to spread the service nationwide in two to three years. The DOCSIS 3.1 standard defines a minimum speed of 1 gbps download, but it is expected to be able to support speeds of 10 gbps downstream or more. "Our intent is to scale it through our footprint through 2016," Comcast VP of network architecture Robert Howald said. "We want to get it across the footprint very quickly... We're shooting for two years." Starting early next year, Comcast will provide some of its customers with a DOCSIS 3.1 modem that will facilitate the faster speeds. Modem vendors and states in which the service will be available first are not clear yet. Read more -here-
