A group of technology giants, including Apple and Google have sent a letter to the Obama administration asking for preservation of citizen's rights for privacy. More than 140 technology companies, technologists and civil society groups also signed the letter. They insist that President Obama should reject proposals to allow encryption "back doors" in mobile devices. "We urge you to reject any proposal that U.S. companies deliberately weaken the security of their products," the letter said. "We request that the White House instead focus on developing policies that will promote rather than undermine the wide adoption of strong encryption technology. Such policies will in turn help to promote and protect cybersecurity, economic growth, and human rights, both here and abroad." US law enforcement and surveillance agencies want to make smartphones and other communications devices easier to hack. The FBI and Justice Department support encryption but would also like to be able to access citizen data, which effectively means that backdoors should be installed in the encryption systems of new devices.
