Numerous reports have indicated that Apple plans to announce a new iPad this week with high-speed 4G long-term evolution wireless connectivity. Reports have suggested the new iPad will connect to the 4G LTE networks of both Verizon and AT&T in the U.S. However, if the new iPad — and the next iPhone – doesn’t support LTE, then Apple will have struck huge blow to the wireless industry and impeded mobile broadband’s progress. The reason for this - LTE is a much more efficient way of delivering mobile data than its HSPA and EV-DO predecessors. That means operators have more capacity to offer their customers and they can – theoretically at least – sell that capacity at a lower price. It turns out that operators can’t fully make the leap unless Apple is on board and helping to push consumers on to next-generation networks.
