Twitter aims to build an open standard for social networks

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey wants to create "an open and decentralized standard" for social media that his very own platform will follow.Twitter is funding a developer team, called Bluesky, and nobody's working on it yet. Twitter CTO Parag Agrawal is tasked with finding a lead for the project, who will build a team of up to five people. The Bluesky account's only tweet quotes Dorsey with the comment "lo" — a reference to the first message ever sent on the internet.

Dorsey highlighted some of the problems that the current swathe of centralized social media sites face, such as addressing misleading information. He also said that many of these sites promote controversy rather than healthy conversation. This could be summed up as some of the problems of Web2—the current Web we use today.

Twitter was originally designed to be part of a federated network, but over the years, the company has tightened controls over its APIs and other elements in such a way as to make it progressively harder to create federated or third-party tools to interact with Twitter users.
